The truth about identity

 Identity.

That's a central theme going around in our culture today-- people trying to figure out who they are. They have forgotten that they are beloved sons and daughters of God, so they try to define themselves by their accomplishments, desires, and talents. And in doing so, they have lost the true meaning of what identity really is.

Think about it-- we now say things that go against our very nature as humans. We say that men can be women, and vice versa. We claim that animals and beings with no Free Will are our equals. We constantly compare ourselves and our accomplishments, desires and talents to those of others. This loss of human reason is evident everywhere in the media.

When I think about it, it seems like the main message that the culture says about identity is that it's up to you to define yourself. Basically, whoever you say you are is who you actually are. So if I say that I'm an athlete, than I'm an athlete. And yes, that also means if I say I'm an alien, than I'm an alien.

But there are several things wrong with this claim.

Firstly, those aspects that you say define yourself aren't really what define you at all. You might be a really good athlete, but that's not entirely who you are, is it? You probably have many other hobbies or interests besides your sport. You probably wouldn't want to be judged on that alone, would you?

Also, let's say you get into an accident and can no longer play your sport. Now guess what? You're not an athlete anymore! So that no longer comprises a part of your identity. And so, your identity has changed. And if your identity changes, than you're pretty much an entirely different person. But is that really true? Well, no. You might no longer be a sports player, but you're still the same person. So, since we remain the same person throughout our entire lives, that means that our identity must stay the same as well.

Finally, when we take what God says about our identity into account, He says we are so much more. He states that He made us in His Image and Likeness and that He set us above every other beast. He calls us His beloved sons and daughters and claims us as His own. The culture's claims don't even come close to the beauty of this truth.

So in summary, it's not really up to us to say who we are-- it's up to God. That might seem restricting at first, but actually, it's so incredibly freeing! Why? Because God has already done all of the hard work of finding our identity for us. All we have to do is embrace that truth and reject the lies we hear. Once again, that is proof of how much He loves us!

Still, it's not easy to accept what the Lord has to offer, but with His help, it can be done. Are you willing to let Him help you?
