Best Catholic saint authors

I always loved the stories of the saints. They were always so exciting and full of adventure! But unfortunately, the way they were portrayed made them seem boring, distant, and even a little creepy. It can get so tiring to hear just how holy they were over and over again that they just seem impossible to relate to.

However, we know that isn't the case. The saints were just like us. They had their faults, sins, slips, and  bad sides. We just need some more authentic portrayals of them.

Luckily, that's where books come in.

Books can make the stories with so few details come alive. They can also answer the question: "What might have it looked like if I could go back in time and witness the saint go through their struggles?" They have room for all of the details that those one-page-per-saint biographies don't. So, maybe we could read some of those!

Below is a list of authors who have written novels/ novellas of saints. I am only including authors who have written series with each book being about a different saint. Note that I have not read all of them, so be aware that there may be some elements, triggers, etc., that I do not know about.

Susan Peek

 Louis de Wohl

His books are slightly more advanced and best for older teens. The saint that each novel is about is put in parentheses next to the title.

The Spear (The Crucifixion)

The Quiet Light (St. Thomas Aquinas)

The Restless Flame (St. Augustine)

Lay Siege to Heaven (St. Catherine of Siena)

Set All Afire (St. Francis Xavier)

The Last Crusader (Don Juan of Austria)

The Joyful Beggar (St. Francis of Assisi)

Citadel of God (St. Benedict)

The Living Wood (St. Helena and Constantine)

The Golden Thread (St. Ignatius of Loyola)

Mary Fabyan Windeatt

Her biographies are based entirely on facts but are very informative and can be read by teens of any age. They are listed in order below:

The Children of Fatima: And Our Lady's Message to the World

The Curè of Ars: The Story of St. John Vianney, Patron Saint of Parish Priests

The Little Flower: The Story of St. Therese of the Child Jesus

Patron Saint of First Communicants: The Story of Blessed Imelda Lambertini

The Miraculous Medal: The Story of Our Lady's Appearances to St. Catherine Laboure

St. Louis de Montfort: The Story of Our Lady's Slave

St. Thomas Aquinas: The Story of the "Dumb Ox"

St. Catherine of Siena: The Story of the Girl Who Saw Saints in the Sky

St. Hyacinth of Poland: The Story of the Apostle of the North

St. Martin de Porres: The Story of the Little Doctor of Lima, Peru

St. Rose of Lima: The Story of the First Canonized Saint of the Americas

Pauline Jaricot: Foundress of the Living Rosary and the Society for the Propagation of the Faith

St. Dominic: Preacher of the Hail Mary and Founder of the Dominican Order

St. Paul the Apostle: The Story of the Apostle to the Gentiles

St. Benedict: The Story of the Father of the Western Monks

King David and His Songs: A Story of the Psalms

St. Margaret Mary: And the Promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

St. John Masias: Marvelous Dominican Gatekeeper of Lima, Peru

St. Francis Solano: Wonder-Worker of the New World and Apostle of Argentina and Peru

St. Marie of New France: The Story of the First Missionary Sisters in Canada

Of course, there are many other saints series besides these. They're just probably not as well known. If you know of any ones that I've missed, let me know in the comments! God bless, and have a great day!

  4. I've never commented here before, so...hello!

Lovely post! I read a lot of Mary Fabyan Windeatt when I was younger - and more recently Lay Siege to Heaven. Louis de Wohl did a very good book on St. Paul too, called The Glorious Folly.

    Lovely to meet you!
